Why visit Cameron Highlands
Cameron Highlands is a hill station in the state of Pahang, high in the Titiwangsa range that runs down the spine of Peninsular Malaysia. It takes its name from William Cameron, a British surveyor who mapped the area in the 1880s, and it grew during the colonial era as a cool retreat from the lowland heat.
The climate is the main draw. Days are mild and nights can be genuinely chilly, and the cool, damp air suits tea, vegetables, flowers and strawberries. The result is a landscape of terraced farms and neat green tea rows that feels very different from the rest of Malaysia. It suits families, couples and anyone who prefers fresh air and gentle walks to nightlife.
Top things to do in Cameron Highlands
BOH Tea Plantation
Malaysia's best-known tea brand has estates here, and its tea centre has a café overlooking the slopes and displays on how tea is made. The view across the bushes is the classic Cameron Highlands photograph.
Strawberry farms
Pick-your-own strawberry farms line the main road, many with cafés serving strawberry desserts, jams and drinks. A fun, easy stop for all ages.
Mossy Forest
A boardwalk winds through moss-draped cloud forest on Gunung Brinchang, often wrapped in mist. The access road is rough and parts of the boardwalk have closed for repairs at times, so most visitors go with a guided tour.
Butterfly garden
Covered gardens display colourful butterflies alongside insects and reptiles. It is a hit with children and takes about an hour to see.
Jungle trails
Numbered walking trails start near Tanah Rata and Brinchang, from short strolls to steep hikes. Hire a local guide for the longer routes, as paths can be slippery and poorly marked.
Farm markets
Roadside markets around Kea Farm sell fresh vegetables, flowers and local snacks. Browsing the stalls is a pleasant way to spend a misty afternoon.
Getting there and getting around
The drive from Kuala Lumpur usually takes around three to four hours. The final climb is a long, winding mountain road, so travellers prone to motion sickness should come prepared. Buses run from Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata, but a private transfer is more comfortable, especially for families. There is no airport or railway station in the highlands.
The main towns, Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang, are strung along one road. Tanah Rata is the usual base, with most of the hotels, restaurants and tour operators. Expect slow traffic at weekends and during school holidays.
How long to stay and when to go
Stay at least one night, ideally two. A day trip from Kuala Lumpur means six or more hours in a vehicle for only a few hours on the hill. With two nights you can see the tea estates, a strawberry farm and the Mossy Forest without rushing, and still fit in a jungle walk.
The highlands are cool all year. Mornings are often the clearest and afternoon rain is common, so plan outdoor sightseeing early. Our guide to the best time to visit Malaysia covers seasonal patterns across the country.
Tip: Pack a fleece or light jacket and closed shoes. Evenings feel cold if you have just come from the plains, and forest trails are often muddy.
How to fit it into your trip
Cameron Highlands works best as an overnight add-on to a holiday based in Kuala Lumpur. The itinerary on our Malaysia package price page lists a Cameron Highlands tea plantation visit among its popular customisations, and the Malaysia tour package from India suggests it for travellers who want more nature in their trip.

Frequently asked questions
Is Cameron Highlands worth a day trip from Kuala Lumpur?
It is possible, but the round trip takes six to eight hours on the road, leaving little time to enjoy the place. We recommend at least one night, and two if you can spare them.
How cold does it get?
It is much cooler than the lowlands. Days are pleasantly mild, but evenings and early mornings can feel cold, so bring a warm layer.
Should I choose Cameron Highlands or Genting Highlands?
They are very different. Genting Highlands is a resort with theme parks, malls and a casino, about an hour from Kuala Lumpur. Cameron Highlands is about tea estates, farms and nature, and is three to four hours away.
Is it suitable for older travellers and young children?
Yes. The tea centres, farms and butterfly garden are reached by vehicle with only short walks. The road up is winding, so bring motion sickness remedies if needed, and leave the steeper jungle trails to fitter walkers.
Can I buy tea to take home?
Yes. The tea centres have shops selling packaged tea, and farm stalls along the main road sell local produce and souvenirs.
